Last night in Brooklyn, the stars came out to celebrate the most powerful record-label in hip hop: DEF JAM’s 25th anniversary in conjunction with Vh1’s “Hip Hop Honors” Awards. There were breakthrough performances by Foxy Brown, Fabulous, Ja Rule, Ashanti, Method Man, Mary J. Blige, and a host of others! It will surely be a program to enjoy once it airs. I wanted to take a brief look into some of the fashion choices of the evening…. Shall we?

First up is my homegirl Foxy Brown. She was looking happy and radiant. The few pounds she put on during her hiatus look good on her– she wears it well. I looooove the bustier; so glam! The shoes are cute too. I like the finger-gloves– perhaps not with this particular outfit, but they are cute. Foxy always brings the heat on the red carpet, this is why I LIVE FOR HER!!!

Next up is Fabolous, who looked great rocking my good friend Brian Wood’s 90’s Alumni sweatshirt that he did in collaboration with Vinny’s Styles. Great choice, Fab! very appropriate for the occasion. He kept it simple, and tucked his chain– no need for gaudy bobbles (like Boosie, Gucci Mane and Plies… YUCK!). Plus, you can’t admire that hawt sweatshirt with a clunky chain in the way, anyways. A+ FAB!

Eve was radiant in all-black. The dress is dope, heels appropriate with just the right accessories. I am also loving the hair. Eve is usually red-carpet ready always– I would prefer if she didn’t have those paw prints though– but alas…

Kid Rock kept it hip-hop– I can’t hate on that, but laces and perhaps a nice white v-neck would have made the outfit look a lot better. I dig the rope chain, he’s almost cute in a trailer-park swag sort of way! Haha.

Chrissette Michelle- who usually sizzles on the red carpet, fell flat for me in this frumpy frock. Maybe it’s the gloves that are throwing me off, but something about this look is off for me. She looks beautiful, however. This fit looks like something I’d wear on a shopping trip with my girls, and not really a red carpet…

What would a hip-hop honors event be without Flava Flav! And I’m surprised to say that he actually looks (dare I say it) NICE! I mean, normally I’d shun those gaudy accessories, but theya re his trademark, so it gets a pass. The tux is clean, meng. The top hat works for him, and the sneakers match. I’d say he’s come a long way from his multi-colored disasters and viking-horned hats. Go FLAV!

Ahhhhh Ashanti. You did try, love. Perhaps that’s the issue. Her hair is atrotious– who okay’ed this? The one-feather in-the-ear, mini-dress and thigh-highs might have worked on Pink– or an artist with an edgier image. On Ashanti it just looks like she’s hopped on the Rihanna-clone band-wagon. Me no likey! I must admit– the boots and the shades are FIYAH tho. Hand those over to me, guuuuurl!

Trey Songz looked dashing and mature. I could see this style on a smooth-crooner like Robin Thicke. I LOVE the fitted look! Trey takes a 3-piece suit, and leaves out the sports coat to add a casual edge. The color schemes work well, and the fit shows off his toned figure. You get an A ++, Trey! Yuuuuuuuuuuup!
