[cK wears "B Devious" intarsia wool knit polo by Brian Wood $250 Retail]
2 weeks ago, I had the extreme pleasure of interviewing Christina Kamara– emcee extraordinaire. I had met her a few weeks back, at a talent showcase at SANTOS. She was wearing Brian Wood’s increasingly-popular MJ Alumni tee, and she looked awesome! The hair, the tee? Too fabulous! I had to catch a snap real quick. We’ve been cool ever since! Being that cK (as she’s commonly called) is a good friend of Brian’s, we all thought it would be dope for her to do a shoot with CCW decked out in B. Wood’s finest menswear pieces. We sat down in her upscale midtown apartment and discussed fashion. The shoot was awesome– the interview was fun. Prepare to be wowed! Check her out:
Cocoa B: We are here in the PENTHOUSE (well, damn near penthouse) of cK, and I am feeling fabulous! I hope you’re ready to talk fashion honey, because we’re going in! But first, for all those that may have been living under a rock, and don’t know you yet– tell us who you are, what you do, where you’re from, etc….
cK: Christina K, ck for short– you’ll really get to know me when the outlaw thing starts comin in, but that’s a whole ‘nother story… [PAUSE for dramatic effect] I’m a hip-hop artist, I got a lil’ pop-edge to it, a lil progressive edge to it… I have this record “I gotta boyfriend” that’s been out and gotten major spins on NY radio, my last video, “Tonight” was in rotation on MTVu– I got a lotta burn on that (and it’s actually still showing, for those that are curious)… I also recently did a mixtape with the Malcolm Digital called “Moonlight in Oz”– where I flipped all the Pink Floyd samples with Wizard of Oz, and told my life story. I am also responsible for the concept behind Nas’ come-back single, “Black President”, and I was also the first producer to work with Dollar (R.I.P), before he unfortunately got murdered….
Cocoa B: WOW, do y’all see that? SO that means if you don’t know ck, you’re most DEFINITELY sleeping, and you need to get your mind right and get it together! [LAUGHS]
ck: [laughs]

Cocoa B: Alright let’s get back into it. What’s your oldest fashion-related memory. It could be an old sweatshirt you wore when you were young [I was so trifling, my mother used to have to hide my favorite red sweatshirt from me, bc I wore that joint DAILY! Ewwwww!], a fave pair of jeans, etc….
ck: Well, I’m from Maryland, I’m not sure what the New York fashions were about too tough but… I remember crying to my mother about not wanting to wear no-name-brand shoes anymore. And the first pair of name-brand shoes I owned were the Reebok 54-11′s. Those princess high-tops? Yes…. I remember beggin, “please mama, please! I’m fly! I’m out here in school, I can’t be seen rocking these no-name joints! I went hard”. So I begged and pleaded for those, and I got em!
Cocoa B: Yes! I remember those… HAUTE! My mother would only buy us NIKE and Addidas when we got the name-brand ish. She had something against reeboks, and I REALLY wanted those! When I got my first job at the church nursery when I was 12, I got them! Hah. Moving on to the next question– who, or what inspires your style?
cK: I inspire my own style. I honestly haven’t bought anything since 2006. Ummm, I get clothes– my designer friends (like Brian Wood) give me clothes, I add my own to it, I remix it, add a sleeve, take off a sleeve– make it my own. So my style really turns out stricly me– I’m an individual…. And I would love to be a real-deal fashionista, and sit at the front of all the exclusive fashion week shows, and be all sexy and stuff but… Even though we’re up here in the penthouse, we’re not quite at that place yet [laughs]. So until then, I just do my own thing, and work what I got, and make it happen!
Cocoa B: Love that! Ok, so if you were a contestant on Survivor, and could only bring 4 items with you– what would those four items be?
cK: Everybody who knows me knows, I live for my chucks. So they are definitely coming with me. And my VEST! Ohhhhh my denim vest, my faaaavorite. That HAS to come with me. Oh, and I need at least one pair of cut off jeans…. And my trusty brown cowboy boots. Gotta have the boots.

Cocoa B: Ok, cool! That’s a great four right there… If you were planning the ultimate high-fashion party, which 3 designers would be a must on your guestlist?
cK: Brian Wood would be one… I’mma keep it real regular, y’all know I’m not so high fashion– but I’ll say I do love Dolce & Gabanna. I can’t really shout out a bunch of names that I don’t know or wear, but keeping with the subject-matter I’mma go head and say Calvin Klein. Because he’s a CK too… See I have this idea, for a streetwear line and it’s gonna be cK squared. And I’m totally serious– I’m doing it!

Cocoa B.: That’s a cool idea though. I like it! [laughs] OK, here we go. I’m going to name two things, you tell me which you prefer– or the less of two evils. Whichever applies! Claudia Schiffer or Cindy Crawford?

cK: I’mma go with platinum.
Cocoa B: Black nail polish or red?

Cocoa B: Karl Lagerfeld or Tom Ford?
cK: Tom Ford.
Cocoa B: Louis Vuitton or Gucci?

Cocoa B: Britney Spears or Christina?

cK: Awwww don’t make me do that. I can’t be involved in that!!! [looks to heavens and sighs] Oh, alright, BIGGIE. But you’re still not being fair!
Cocoa B: Ha! Great answers! We had fun interviewing and shooting you in your lovely home. We’ll see you next time!
